Studies of magnetic nanoparticle systems have attracted much interest in the last few years owing to their fundamental interest and technological applications. In particular, the correlation of parameters such as size, morphology, crystalline structure, and shape of the particles with the resulting magnetic properties has been thoroughly investigated, but many open questions remain to be answered. Besides the effect of grain size distribution, which strongly affects the magnetic response of the system, important factors need to be controlled, such as the surface of the particles both roughness and composition gradient , the shape, and the phases formed within the nanograins. Another crucial point is the role played by magnetic interactions among the magnetic entities.

Golden Gopher Magnetic Biosensing Team. Electrical resistance in a specially engineered tri-layered magnetic thin film changes when a magnetic field is applied. GMR nanosensor has been widely and successfully used in hard disk drives for over 20 years. Its applications in bimolecular diagnostics just emerged in recent years. To date, chip based GMR along with magnetic nanoparticles MNPs have become a powerful tool for high sensitivity, real-time electrical readout, and rapid biomolecule detection. It could be visualized that this GMR technology should have great application prospects in disease monitor and prevention areas by virtue of its powerful diagnostic capability. GMR-based biosensing system in our group has successfully detected protein biomarkers for human disease such as lung cancer, prostate cancer, heart disease, and environmental issues such as mercury pollution.

Magnetic nanoparticles offer the most natural and elegant way for fabrication of such multi- functional materials. In this review, we briefly summarize the recent progress in the synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles which now can be done with precise control over the size and surface chemistry , and nanoscale interactions leading to their self-assembly into 1D, 2D or 3D aggregates. Various approaches to self-organization, directed-, or template-assisted assembly of these nanostructures are discussed with the special emphasis on magnetic-field enabled interactions. We also discuss new physical phenomena associated with magnetic coupling between nanoparticles and their interaction with a substrate and the characterization of the physical properties at the nanoscale using various experimental techniques including scanning quantum interferometry SQUID and magnetic force microscopy. Applications of magnetic nanoparticle assemblies in data storage, spintronics, drug delivery, cancer therapy, and prospective applications such as adaptive materials and multifunctional reconfigurable materials are also highlighted. Magnetic nanoparticles: recent advances in synthesis, self-assembly and applications

Magnetic nanostructures are being developed for use in many aspects of our daily life, spanning areas such as data storage, sensing and biomedicine. Whereas patterned nanomagnets are traditionally two-dimensional planar structures, recent work is expanding nanomagnetism into three dimensions; a move triggered by the advance of unconventional synthesis methods and the discovery of new magnetic effects. In three-dimensional nanomagnets more complex magnetic configurations become possible, many with unprecedented properties. Here we review the creation of these structures and their implications for the emergence of new physics, the development of instrumentation and computational methods, and exploitation in numerous applications. Nanomagnetism, the scientific field dedicated to the study of nanoscale magnetic objects, has undergone an explosion of activity over the last few decades, driven by fascinating discoveries such as the interaction of magnetization with spin currents the area of spintronics 1 , 2 and a wide range of real-world applications 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7. For example, since both the storage and sensing parts of hard disk drives use nanomagnetic structures, the development of nanomagnetism has been a key factor in the vast recent improvements in computer performance and the development of cloud computing.

Nanomagnetism: Fundamentals and Applications is a complete guide to the theory and practical applications of magnetism at the nanometer scale. It covers a wide range of potential applications including materials science, medicine, and the environment. A tutorial covers the special magnetic properties of nanoscale systems in various environments, from free clusters to nanostructured materials. Subsequent chapters focus on the current state of research in theory and experiment in specific areas, and also include applications of nanoscale systems to synthesizing high-performance materials and devices.
