Engineering Considerations of Stress, Strain, and Strength

An analytical approach for determining case depth requirements in carburized gears is presented. It is indicated that the minimum case depth requirement in carburized gears is dictated primarily by spoiling fatigue which occurs when the applied alternating shear stress exceeds the allowable fatigue strength in the vicinity of the casecore boundary. Based on these concepts, the following procedure for establishing case depth is suggested: 1 From design load and gear geometry data, compute the applied shear stress gradient at the most severe location along the path of contact.

In recent years, the hole drilling method for determining residual stresses has been implemented with optical methods such as holographic interferometry and ESPI to overcome certain limitations of the strain rosette version of hole drilling. Although offering advantages, the interferometric methods require vibration isolation, a significant drawback to their use outside of the laboratory. In this study, a 3D image correlation approach was used to measure micron-sized surface displacements caused by the localized stress relief associated with hole drilling. Residual stresses were then found from the displacements using non-dimensional relations previously derived by finite element analysis. A major advantage of image correlation is that it does not require interferometric vibration isolation.

Metrics details. Neuber rule and Arola-Ramulu model are widely used to predict the stress concentration factor of rough specimens. However, the height parameters and effective valley radius used in these two models depend strongly on the resolution of the roughness-measuring instruments and are easily introduce measuring errors. Besides, it is difficult to find a suitable parameter to characterize surface topography to quantitatively describe its effect on stress concentration factor. In order to overcome these disadvantages, profile moments are carried out to characterize surface topography, surface topography is simulated by superposing series of cosine components, the stress concentration factors of different micro cosine-shaped surface topographies are investigated by finite element analysis.

Fatigue as a Design Criterion pp Cite as. The presently used approach for estimating fatigue strength or cyclic life of a component leaves much to be desired, and there is a definite need for the establishment of reliable methods for assessing fatigue integrity. Any such methods should utilise the basic material data which may be obtained by testing simple specimens in the laboratory either under constant load stress , constant strain displacement , or possibly a constant product of stress and strain. Such tests should, for convenience and simplicity, preferably be carried out on plain specimens, although the possible advantages of testing some type of notched specimen or simulated component must also be considered. The literature contains few re- ports of the aortic tensile strength. In most of these the term has been misused. Budy- nas and J. Nisbett, McGraw-Hill, The design and calculation of a spur gear transmission, one of the often-performed mechanical engineering tasks, requires a lot of long and complicated tedious computations.

Effect of surface topography on stress concentration factor

- Salida! - Salida.
