Green Building Standards and Certification Systems

Description

Who should know about it?

Green Building Council USGBC it includes a set of rating systems for the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of green buildings , homes, and neighborhoods which aims to help building owners and operators be environmentally responsible and use resources efficiently. JD Polk co-founder of Solar Cells Inc First Solar also contributed to the guidelines set forth in the initial formation, as did long time solar advocate Lawton Chiles the Governor of Florida at the time. As founding chairman of the LEED Steering Committee, Watson led a broad-based consensus process until , bringing together non-profit organizations, government agencies, architects, engineers, developers, builders, product manufacturers and other industry leaders. From to , LEED grew from one standard for new construction to a comprehensive system of interrelated standards covering aspects from the design and construction to the maintenance and operation of buildings.

New projects must register under LEED v4. It also applies to retail, mid- and high-rise multi-unit residential buildings MURBs , public assembly buildings, manufacturing plants, and other types of buildings. Applicants with space that is not fitted out at the time of certification e. Strategies and additional resources are included to help in meeting the requirements of each credit and prerequisite. The following documents and tools are critical to any project pursuing LEED certification. These materials are copyright protected and may only be used on projects that are registered for LEED certification. Description

They provide some of the most effective means to achieving a range of global goals, such as addressing climate change, creating sustainable and thriving communities, and driving economic growth. Highlighting these benefits, and facilitating a growing evidence base for proving them, is at the heart of what we do as an organisation. The benefits of green buildings can be grouped within three categories: environmental, economic and social. Here, we provide a range of facts and statistics from various third-party sources that present these benefits. One of the most important types of benefit green buildings offer is to our climate and the natural environment. Green buildings can not only reduce or eliminate negative impacts on the environment, by using less water, energy or natural resources, but they can - in many cases - have a positive impact on the environment at the building or city scales by generating their own energy or increasing biodiversity.

Reduction of energy consumption of buildings is an important step in the move towards a sustainable economy. How can buildings be made net zero energy, in different climates? This course introduces you to zero energy design. It will teach you a stepped approach to design a zero energy climate concept for existing buildings: homes, schools, offices, shops etc. It will demonstrate how an integrated approach, which takes into account both passive measures such as thermal insulation and sun shading and active measures such as heat pumps and photovoltaic panels , can deliver the best results. It will do so by providing you with an overview of possible measures, and through reviewing several case studies of zero energy buildings in the Netherlands, with lessons for other climates as well.

Who should know about it?

Buildings have extensive direct and indirect impacts on the environment. During their construction, occupancy, renovation, repurposing, and demolition, buildings use energy, water, and raw materials, generate waste, and emit potentially harmful atmospheric emissions. These facts have prompted the creation of green building standards, certifications, and rating systems aimed at mitigating the impact of buildings on the natural environment through sustainable design.

Abstract: The concept of Zero Energy Building ZEB has gained wide international attention during last few years and is now seen as the future target for the design of buildings.. Researchers are continuously trying to find out the way of reducing the emission of carbon dioxide and implementations of the renewable energies technologies. The zero energy building concept is a realistic solution for the CO2 emission and reduction of energy demand in the building sector. Zero energy building design has become a high priority for architects and multi-disciplinary researchers related to architectural engineering and building physics.

Buildings must, at a minimum, offset all of their energy consumption with on-site generation from renewable resources. Grants will be paid incrementally, with full payment contingent on actual building performance. The program goal is to encourage exemplary buildings that bring together beautiful design and careful construction to maximize energy efficiency, showcase renewable energy and, by educating the public and professionals, help pave the way for a larger shift in the building sector.
