We no longer sell books. Books can now be sourced new or second hand through the internet far cheaper than we can hold and sell them for from here. For most people the propeller information in 'Boat Mechanical Systems Handbook' is enough. This is a specialized propeller book. Written by a practical sailer that knows his subject thoroughly. Helpful Boatbuilding Books. Helpful Boatbuilding Books The following list is just a guide to books that, depending on your project, will guide you through your boat building project.
Since the early eighteen hundreds, scientists have been solving the problems of corrosion. We are zeroing in on boat and yacht corrosion and can use the methods and reference tables that have been developed. Within a few hours you will be able to solve the so called mysteries of corrosion. It is fairly difficult to glance at a failed metal boat part and tell immediately what caused that particular failure. Most likely the failure was caused by a combination of reasons including wrong choice of alloy by the manufacturer, manufacturing error such as overheating, contamination or wrong coating, error in application by boat builder, water velocity, impurities or pollution in the electrolyte, temperature, vibration, stress, crevice, galvanic or stray current corrosion.
Copper is a mineral and an element essential to our everyday lives. It is a major industrial metal because of its high ductility, malleability, thermal and electrical conductivity and resistance to corrosion. It is an essential nutrient in our daily diet. And, its antimicrobial property is becoming increasingly important to the prevention of infection. It ranks third after iron and aluminum in terms of quantities consumed in the USA.
An earthing system UK and IEC or grounding system US connects specific parts of an electric power system with the ground , typically the Earth's conductive surface, for safety and functional purposes. Regulations for earthing systems vary considerably among countries, though most follow the recommendations of the International Electrotechnical Commission. Regulations may identify special cases for earthing in mines, in patient care areas, or in hazardous areas of industrial plants. In addition to electric power systems, other systems may require grounding for safety or function. Tall structures may have lightning rods as part of a system to protect them from lightning strikes. Telegraph lines may use the Earth as one conductor of a circuit, saving the cost of installation of a return wire over a long circuit. Radio antennas may require particular grounding for operation, as well as to control static electricity and provide lightning protection.

This is another little gem from Payne, and complements perfectly his book entitled Understanding Boat Wiring. Again, it is not a large book almost pocket-sized, in fact yet it will help you not only understand the subject but assist you in solving difficulties. From general information, the author deals with the different types of battery, their rating and selection, safety, installation and maintenance. There are also sections on alternators, regulators, and alternative charging, from wind and sun.
About this time of year, when lightning strikes become frequent occurrences, we receive a good deal of mail asking about static dissipators such as the Lightning Master. These are the downside-up, wire-brush-like devices you see sprouting from antennas and rooftops in cities and towns, and more frequently, on sailboat masts. Sailors also will be interested in reading about our discussion of conventional lightning protection systems in Getting a Charge Out of Lightning. All sailors-except those who sail exclusively in the most northern but still liquid reaches of the Arctic Ocean, or most southern parts of the Antarctic Ocean-are well aware of lightning and its inherent risks. Lightning awareness generally takes one of two forms: 1 aware, concerned, resigned, do nothing or 2 aware, concerned, do something, and hope what was done will be more beneficial than harmful.
