It is an essential source of renewable energy , and its technologies are broadly characterized as either passive solar or active solar depending on how they capture and distribute solar energy or convert it into solar power. Active solar techniques include the use of photovoltaic systems , concentrated solar power , and solar water heating to harness the energy. Passive solar techniques include orienting a building to the Sun, selecting materials with favorable thermal mass or light-dispersing properties, and designing spaces that naturally circulate air. The solar wind is a stream of charged particles released from the upper atmosphere of the Sun , called the corona. This plasma mostly consists of electrons , protons and alpha particles with kinetic energy between 0. The composition of the solar wind plasma also includes a mixture of materials found in the solar plasma: trace amounts of heavy ions and atomic nuclei C, N, O, Ne, Mg, Si, S, and Fe. Its particles can escape the Sun's gravity because of their high energy resulting from the high temperature of the corona, which in turn is a result of the coronal magnetic field. The flow of the solar wind is no longer supersonic at the termination shock. Other related phenomena include the aurora northern and southern lights , the plasma tails of comets that always point away from the Sun, and geomagnetic storms that can change the direction of magnetic field lines.
