Letters on Demonology and Witchcraft Addressed to J. Lockhart, Esq. A lifelong student of folklore, Scott was able to draw on a wide-ranging collection of primary and secondary sources. His book found many readers throughout the 19th century, and exercised a significant influence in promoting the Victorian vogue for Gothic and ghostly fiction. Though on first publication it met with mixed reviews, it is now recognised as a pioneering work of scientific anthropology , treating of its subject in an acute and analytical way which prefigures later scholarship on the subject, as well as presenting a highly readable collection of supernatural anecdotes. The book is divided into ten parts, each taking the form of a letter from the author to his son-in-law, J. This format allows Scott to write in an informal, discursive manner, enhancing the book's readability.

I remember this book scaring the hell out of me when I was a gullible kid. Studying demons and the Devil, describing their appearance, behavior and how to repel them were all a large part of it, but in the end demonology of the early modern Europe should not be removed from its context: The witch trials and hunts which it served to justify. Uncommonly good collectible and rare books from uncommonly good. JOHN D. An actual pact with the devil or devils , signed and everything, scared me shitless as a kid! Its acceptability as a subject has var-ied depending on how threatening the chang-ing, ruling religious powers deemed it.
Sir Walter Scott, 1st Baronet, FRSE, was a Scottish playwright, novelist and poet who became the first English-language author to be internationally celebrated within their own lifetime. Although he wrote extensively, he was by profession an advocate and judge, and continued to practice alongside his writing career. Scott was fascinated by the oral tradition of the Scottish borders, with its poetry, folklore and legend, and he collected stories throughout his youth and as a young man, almost obsessively. Scott's friend, James Ballantyne, had founded a printing press in , and had published much of Scott's early work, including the Lay of the Last Minstrel which firmly established Scott' position in the Scottish literary tradition, and that of English literature as a whole. Scott was by now printing regularly with the Ballantynes and convinced them to relocate their press to Edinburgh and became a partner in their business. In Scott was offered the post of Poet Laureate, but turned the offer down and the position was taken by Robert Southey.
Among much reading of my earlier days, it is no doubt true that I travelled a good deal in the twilight regions of superstitious disquisitions. Many hours have I lost.
