As activity has boomed and job growth continues to increase, training in this area for new and experienced engineers is essential. This book provides comprehensive information on both the engineering design and research aspects of this emerging industry. Part I: Shale Gas 1.

Handbook of Petroleum Processing

This extensively updated second edition of the already valuable reference targets research chemists and engineers who have chosen a career in the complex and essential petroleum industry, as well as other professionals just entering the industry who seek a comprehensive and accessible resource on petroleum processing. The handbook describes and discusses the key components and processes that make up the petroleum refining industry. Beginning with the basics of crude oils and their nature, it continues with the commercial products derived from refining and with related issues concerning their environmental impact.

At its core is a complete overview of the processes that make up a modern refinery, plus a brief history of the development of processes. Also described in detail are design techniques, operations and in the case of catalytic units, the chemistry of the reaction routes.

The handbook also covers off-sites and utilities, as well as environmental and safety aspects relevant to the industry. The chapter on refinery planning covers both operational planning and the decision making procedures for new or revamped processes.

Major equipment used in the industry is reviewed along with details and examples of the process specifications for each. An extensive glossary and dictionary of the terms and expressions used in petroleum refining, plus appendices supplying data such as converging factors and selected crude oil assays, as well as an example of optimizing a refinery configuration using linear programming are all included to aid the reader. Steven A. Treese retired from Phillips 66 in as the Hydro processing Team Lead after 40 years; but continues to take on the occasional consulting assignment in process engineering and refining.

Steve's range of experience includes catalyst development, hydro processing, hydrogen production, utilities, sulfur recovery, geothermal, shale oil, nitrogen fertilizers, process design, procurement and licensing. He is a licensed Professional Engineer. He is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

Steve's hobbies include woodworking, boating, fermentation and photography. Skip to main content Skip to table of contents. Advertisement Hide. Unconventional Oil and Gas Resources Handbook: Evaluation and Development is a must-have, helpful handbook that brings a wealth of information to engineers and geoscientists.

An analytical model was developed in this study for predicting the long-term productivity of these wells under conditions of pseudosteady-state PSSS flow, considering the cross-bilinear flow in the rock matrix and hydraulic fractures. Performance of the model was verified with the well-productivity data obtained from a shale-gas well and a shale-oil well. Sensitivity analyses were performed to identify key parameters of hydraulic fracturing affecting well productivity. The conducted field case studies show that the analytical model overpredicts shale-gas-well productivity by 2. A sensitivity analysis with the model indicates that well productivity increases with reduced fracture spacing, increased fracture length, and increased fracture width, but not proportionally.

Background: The United States has experienced a boom in natural gas production due to recent technological innovations that have enabled this resource to be produced from shale formations. Objectives: We reviewed the body of evidence related to exposure pathways in order to evaluate the potential environmental public health impacts of shale gas development. We highlight what is currently known and identify data gaps and research limitations by addressing matters of toxicity, exposure pathways, air quality, and water quality.
